Man Utd Plot Move For 31-Goal Striker As van Gaal Eyes RvP Replacement
Man Utd are eyeing a move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani but any potential deal may involve Angel Di Maria heading in the opposite direction
With the summer transfer window finally open for business, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd eye Edinson Cavani….
Manchester United are eyeing a sensational move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani but any potential deal may involve Angel Di Maria heading in the opposite direction, according to the Guardian.
With Robin van Persie on the verge of completing his move to Fenerbache [via BBC] and Javier Hernandez expected to follow him out the exit door this summer, it leaves Louis van Gaal with just two senior strikers to choose from next season.
Therefore, I expect the Dutchman to bring in at least one new front-man over the coming weeks and the Guardian claim that the United boss has made Cavani his prime target.
The Uruguayan international became one of the deadliest strikers in European football during his time at Napoli where he scored 104 goals in just 138 games before making a big-money move to PSG in 2013.
Despite largely being played out-of-position on the wing, Cavani has still managed to keep-up his excellent goal-scoring rate and netted 31 goals in 53 appearances last season to help Laurent Blanc’s men complete a historic domestic treble.
However, he’s constantly been linked with a move to the Premier League amid rumours he’s unsettled in France and the Guardian suggest that van Gaal is now hoping to finally lure the 28-year-old to Old Trafford this summer.
Obviously Cavani would be an exciting signing for the Red Devils but his arrival could come at a price as the newspaper claims that any potential deal may involve Angel Di Maria going in the opposite direction to PSG.
The Argentinean international endured a difficult debut season in England following his move from Real Madrid last summer and the Guardian say that van Gaal is open to the idea of using him as bait to get his hands on Cavani.
If a swap deal did go through, I’m sure there would be some United fans disappointed to see Di Maria leave before he’s had a proper chance to prove himself at Old Trafford, but the arrival of Cavani would surely help ease the pain.
The former Palermo-man would be an excellent signing for United and he could be the difference for the club in the title-race next season. Following the arrival’s of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin on Monday, United’s midfield now looks extremely strong, so the main concern is finding a top class goal-scorer and Cavani certainly fits the bill.

I still think United could do with another central defender, and of course they’ll need to replace David De Gea if he ends up leaving, but if they could fill those positions and sign Cavani I think van Gaal will have a great chance of lifting the title next season.
