Arsenal have received another devastating injury blow with midfielder Jack Wilshere set to undergo surgery that will rule him out for around three months.
Arsenal have received another devastating injury blow with midfielder Jack Wilshere set to undergo surgery that will rule him out for around three months.
Wilshere is yet to feature this season after suffering a hairline fracture to his left fibula during pre-season shortly before our Community Shield clash with Chelsea in early August.
The 23-year-old was pencilled-in to make his return after the recent international break but Arsene Wenger confirmed last week that Jack’s recovery was progressing slowly and he had suffered a minor setback.
It appears that setback has now developed into a full-on catastrophe as the club have this afternoon confirmed reports that following consultation with a specialist, the decision has been taken to operate.
Wilshere is set to undergo surgery over the coming days that will see a small plate inserted into his leg and the midfielder is expected to be sidelined for a further three months.
A statement on Arsenal.com read:
Due to a slow healing response from a fracture suffered in August, the club can confirm that Jack Wilshere is to undergo an operation to his left fibula.
The decision to intervene has been taken quickly after regular reviews by specialists, who feel that Jack’s scans show that the healing process is not progressing as well as expected.
Jack will have surgery in London in the forthcoming days. This will involve inserting a small plate in his left fibula. Jack is likely to be out for approximately three months.
This is a huge blow, both for Wilshere and Arsenal Football Club. Jack’s entire career has been plagued by injury problems and after spending six months out last season, he’s now set to miss at least the first half of this campaign too.
We’re now going to have to make-do with the options we’ve got over the coming months and pray that we don’t suffer any more serious injuries as Wilshere has joined Danny Welbeck and Tomas Rosicky in being ruled out until around Christmas.
