It seems it was a case of second time lucky with Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United. He may have his doubters this season, considering his often overly cautious style of football, but the great Sir Alex Ferguson had him in his exclusive short-list to take over at Old Trafford as his successor back in 2013.

Revealing all in his new book on the art of management ‘Leading’, the Scot named the Dutchman along with Jose Mourinho, David Moyes, Carlo Ancelotti and Pepe Guardiola in his stellar list.

Moyes came and went, and now Van Gaal is leading United towards the Premier League summit once more. And he will fancy his chances of closing the gap on Man City with a home encounter against a struggling Sunderland side this weekend.

The Red Devils have four wins from their first six games, and sit just two points behind their arch rivals in second. City, meanwhile, travel to White Hart Lane to take on a static Tottenham in the early kick off on Saturday.

In the last few seasons, Spurs haven’t had it easy in fixtures between the two clubs, with City scoring 16 to their two over only four matches. With City looking to bounce back from their shock 2-1 defeat at home to West Ham, Mauricio Pochettino has quite a task ahead of him.

Chelsea recorded only their second win of the season against Arsenal last weekend, a game dominated once more by the antics of one Diego Costa. The Spaniard has been slapped with a retrospective three-match ban for his behaviour during the game, and he will sit out the tough trip to Newcastle on Saturday. Jose Mourinho has never won at St James’s Park, and while Newcastle right at the tail end of the league after an awful start, he know it won’t be easy to secure the points.

Liverpool, meanwhile, may well be looking forward to their home fixture against lowly Aston Villa, especially as its not a cup game. Tim Sherwood’s men ousted the Scousers in last year’s FA Cup semi-final, but sit just a point above the relegation zone, with only a 1-0 away win at newly promoted Bournemouth on their belts. Liverpool could be without striker Christian Benteke due to injury, but have Daniel Sturridge back in the side. How he’d love a goal or two!

High flying Leicester City host Arsenal on the Saturday, with the loveable Claudio Ranieri still on the hunt for an evening of pizza with his comeback kings. The Foxes haven’t yet kept a clean sheet, the incentive for which is dinner with the gaffer, and it would be a shock if they grabbed one against Arsene Wenger’s side. Not to say that Arsenal are firing on all cylinders – far from it.

Five goals from six is nothing to write home about, but with Leicester’s defence very accommodating when faced with opposition strikers, that could be set to change. It has all the makings of a score draw – which will certainly interest those of you playing The Football Pools…

Stalemates are the aim of the game in The Football Pools, specifically score draws. Every weekend, 49 top fixtures are selected, and all you have to do is pick ten that you reckon will end in a score draw.

Tens of thousands of pounds are up for grabs, and if you hit eight score draws from your ten, you’re guaranteed a big cash payout! A recent winner pocketed over £90,000, and all he did was pick out those score draws!

So much cash to win, and so little effort. And it costs just £1 to play! Plus, if you choose to play by direct debit, The Football Pools will give you your first four games for free!

So, if you think things will be a little too cagey on Saturday, make sure you set up a safety net with The Football Pools. If its a dour weekend chock full of draws, you’ll still have a smile on your face!
