Louis van Gaal has confirmed that David De Gea’s injury is not serious and is hopeful the goalkeeper will be fit for Manchester United’s crucial double-header against Midtjylland and Arsenal.
De Gea was forced to withdraw from last weeks Europa League last 32 first leg tie at Midtjylland after suffering a knee injury while making a routine save during the warm-up.
The Spaniard watched from the stands as, despite an impressive performance from stand-in goalkeeper Sergio Romero, United slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat to the Danish minnows while he also sat out of last night’s 3-0 FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town.
There were fears that the 25-year-old had suffered serious damage to his knee and was facing an extended spell on the sidelines, which would have been a major blow to United as they look to salvage something from a disappointing season.
However, van Gaal has confirmed that the injury isn’t serious and has suggested that De Gea could make his return for Thursday’s second leg against Midtjylland at Old Trafford or Sunday’s huge Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Speaking after the Shrewsbury game, van Gaal is quoted as saying by the Express:
“It was not so heavy the injury, so it is possible for Thursday but it is also possible against Arsenal,” he said.
“[The Midtjylland match] in my opinion is a big game because it’s a chance to qualify for the Champions League next season.”
This news will come as a huge boost to United as De Gea is arguably their most important player and it will play a key role if the Red Devils are to get positive results against Midtjylland and Arsenal over the coming week.
van Gaal has had to cope with a crippling injury list this season with Wayne Rooney, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Antonio Valencia and Adnan Januzaj among those who are currently unavailable for selection.
