The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Raphael Varane hints he’s unhappy at Real Madrid….
Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Raphael Varane after the defender dropped a hint he’s unhappy with life at Real Madrid, according to the Mirror.
Varane joined Madrid from Lens in 2011 and looked to have started to establish himself as a first team regular under former boss Rafa Benitez during the first half of the 2015/16 season.
However, the French international fell out-of-favour when Zinedine Zidane took over in January with the former playmaker opting to play Pepe alongside Sergio Ramos in the key fixtures, including all four legs of their recent Champions League games with Wolfsrbug and Manchester City.
It’s led to speculation that Varane could be on the move this summer with the Daily Star reporting last week that the centre-back could be heading to Manchester United in a £30m deal this summer after the Red Devils supposedly identified him as a key target.
United’s hopes of pulling off what would be a significant coup have been boosted after Varane seemed to suggest that he’s not happy at losing his first team place and questioned his importance to the Madrid team.
He’s quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“Until November I played nearly every game, it’s also true that I made a few uncharacteristic mistakes but, over the whole of the season, you can’t fixate on this. There have been loads of positives.
“It’s true that I would have liked to play the season’s decisive games, especially in the Champions League, but these are the manager’s decisions.”
“After five years in Madrid I hope to be able to overcome some obstacles. I feel this is a crucial moment.
“I think a player has to develop and feel that they are important.”
“I try to work hard every day and progress. I know the qualities I have and what I am capable of.”
United could certainly do with a player of Varane’s quality as Daley Blind has been forced to fill-in alongside Chris Smalling at centre-back this season with the likes of Phil Jones struggling for form and fitness.
I very-much doubt United will make any serious moves in the transfer market until the future of Louis van Gaal is decides but the chances of Varane agreeing a move to Old Trafford could be boosted even further should Jose Mourinho replace the under-fire Dutch boss this summer.
Mourinho was in charge at Madrid when they signed Varane five years ago so he knows the French international extremely well and I wouldn’t be surprised if the player would be keen to be reunited with the ‘Special One’ in Manchester.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I think Varane would be a sensational signing if United could pull it off as he could form a superb partnership with Smalling next season.
