England striker Jamie Vardy is scheduled to undergo his medical with Arsenal today ahead of a proposed £22m move from Leicester City, according to ESPN.
News broke on Friday evening of Arsenal’s interest in Vardy and the Mirror reported yesterday that Arsene Wenger expected to wrap-up the deal before the striker flew out to France with the England squad on Monday morning ahead of Euro 2016.
Roy Hodgson has indicated that he doesn’t want his players distracted by transfer negotiations during the European Championships so Wenger is trying to rush through the Vardy deal quickly before he heads off with his country.
And it looks like the deal is going to edge ever-closer today as ESPN claim that Vardy is booked-in to undergo his medical with the Gunners on Sunday afternoon after we triggered a £22m release clause in his Leicester contract.
The news outlet says that Arsenal have offered the 29-year-old a lucrative four-year contract to lure him away from the newly-crowned Premier League champions so baring any late problems, it looks as though Vardy is set to become our second major signing of the summer following the arrival of midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Wenger has been forced in to the market to bring in another forward after Danny Welbeck was ruled out for nine months with a serious knee injury but few would have guessed Vardy would be the man the boss would go for.
The former Fleetwood Town hitman has just come off the back of a sensational season that saw him fire 24 goals to help guide Leicester to a shock title win, so on the face of it this looks like a shrewd move from the Gunners.

However, it’s certainly a change in tact from Wenger to spend big money on a striker who’s approaching his 30th birthday, so it looks as though the boss has finally decided to look more short-term in his quest to bring the title to the Emirates.
