Manchester United have moved in to pole position to sign Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba in a sensational £78m deal this summer after Manchester City cooled their interest, according to the Daily Star.
Pogba used to be on the books at United as a teenager but left the club to join Juve on a free transfer in 2012 after refusing to sign a new contract having failed to make the breakthrough under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The French international has developed in to one of the best all-round midfielders in world football during his time in Italy and he’s helped the Turin giants win a whole host of trophies including four consecutive Serie A titles.
The 23-year-old has constantly been linked with a move back to the Premier League and it looks as though he’ll be given the opportunity to make a dramatic return to Old Trafford this summer.
That’s because the Daily Star are reporting that new boss Jose Mourinho has made Pogba his number one midfield target after United moved in to pole position to pull off a sensational £78m deal.
The newspaper suggests that long-term admirers Man City have decided to turn their attention to other targets leaving United free to pursue what would be a British record transfer – eclipsing the near £60m United paid Real Madrid for Angel Di Maria two years ago.
Mourinho was installed as the new United manager last month and the Portuguese coach is expected to be busy this summer overhauling the squad with a midfielder a key area for concerns as Michael Carrick is out of contract while Bastian Schweinsteiger endured a difficult debut season in England.

Obviously Pogba would be a major coup if United could pull it off as he’s undoubtedly one of the finest midfielders in the game today and the Daily Star claim United are confident of luring him back to Manchester with Mourinho urging the board to act quickly to secure a deal.
Pogba would be the kind of player Mourinho could build his new-look team around and be the physical presence in the middle of the park that United have lacked in recent years, so I’m sure fans are eagerly awaiting further developments on this proposed move.
Following these reports, bookmakers have made United 8/1 favourites to sign Pogba this summer so it might be worth getting your money on the Red Devils now before the odds shorten even further. Make sure to use a Unibet bonus code to get even more bang for your buck when signing up.
