Manchester United are ready to test Real Madrid’s resolve with a £31m bid for Toni Kroos after Jose Mourinho identified the midfielder as his dream signing this summer, according to the Express.
Mourinho was installed as the new United manager last month and the Portuguese coach is expected to be busy in the transfer market rebuilding the squad he’s inherited from Louis van Gaal following a poor campaign last season.
A new central midfielder is likely to be on the agenda as Bastian Schweinsteiger is being tipped to leave after enduring an injury-plagued debut season in the Premier League following his move from Bayern Munich last summer.
Several big names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks but the Express are citing reports coming out of Spain that claim Mourinho has identified Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos as an ideal addition to his new-look squad.
The newspaper says the so-called ‘Special One’ has instructed the United board to do whatever it takes to land the German international and the club are ready to respond by tabling an opening offer worth just over £31m.
Kroos has played a key role at the heart of the Madrid midfield since joining the club from Bayern Munich in 2014 and once again started in the middle of the park to help the La Liga giants secure the Champions League trophy last month.
However, while it’s understood boss Zinedine Zidane would prefer to keep hold of Kroos, the Express suggest the Spaniards may cash-in if an offer of at least £35m was put on the table as they look to raise funds for a mega-swoop for Paul Pogba.
It remains to be seen if United would be willing to meet that figure but given that their opening bid is just shy of Madrid’s reported asking price, you’d expect the Premier League giants to be prepared to increase their offer by an extra £4m.

If United could agree a fee with Madrid, they would then need to tempt Kroos to make the move to Old Trafford but the Red Devils have the financial power to put a very appealing offer on the table for the 26-year-old.
I think Kroos would be a superb addition if United could somehow pull it off and £35m would be a very reasonable fee in today’s over-inflated transfer market for a player of his quality and experience.
