The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are ready to make their move for Raphael Varane…
Manchester United are ready to open talks with Real Madrid over a possible deal to sign unsettled centre-back Raphael Varane this summer, according to the Mirror.
Jose Mourinho is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer overhauling the squad he inherited from Louis van Gaal and the Portuguese coach has already splashed out on highly-rated 22-year-old defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal.
However, it seems the Ivory Coast international is considered as one for the future as the Mirror claim Mourinho doesn’t think Bailly is ready to be a first team regular at Old Trafford just yet and will therefore also look to bring in a more established name to play alongside Chris Smalling.
The newspaper suggests that Mourinho is now ready to try and raid his former club as they claim United are set to make a formal enquiry to Real Madrid over the availability of Raphael Varane this summer.
Varane has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and the Mirror cite reports from Spanish outlet Marca who state that while Madrid are keen to tie the defender down to a new deal, the 23-year-old could be tempted by a move to United due to concerns over his role at the Bernabeu.
The French international fell out-of-favour when Zinedine Zidane became manager half way through last season with the French legend opting for Pepe and Sergio Ramos as his first choice defensive pairing.
Varane was left on the bench for key Champions League games and the defender admitted last month that he’s not happy at losing his place and questioned his importance to the Madrid team.
He’s quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“Until November I played nearly every game, it’s also true that I made a few uncharacteristic mistakes but, over the whole of the season, you can’t fixate on this. There have been loads of positives.
“It’s true that I would have liked to play the season’s decisive games, especially in the Champions League, but these are the manager’s decisions.”
“After five years in Madrid I hope to be able to overcome some obstacles. I feel this is a crucial moment.
“I think a player has to develop and feel that they are important.”
“I try to work hard every day and progress. I know the qualities I have and what I am capable of.”
It looks like United are ready to exploit the uncertainty by trying to lure Varane to Manchester this summer and Mourinho knows the player well as he was the man in charge when Madrid signed Varane five year ago, and it appears the so-called ‘Special One’ is hoping to be reunited at Old Trafford.

Varane would be a sensational signing if United could pull it off this summer as he’s no doubt one of the best young defenders in world football and he’d be the type of player Mourinho could build his new-look side around next season.
The French international was expected to play a key role for hosts France at Euro 2016 but a hamstring injury cruelly ruled him out of the tournament.
