Manchester United have tabled a British record £80m bid for Paul Pogba as Jose Mourinho steps-up his efforts to land the Juventus midfielder ahead of Real Madrid, according to the Telegraph.
Mourinho is gearing up for a busy summer in the transfer market as he looks to overhaul the squad left behind by Louis van Gaal and build a group of players capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.
Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly has already been signed from Villarreal while the Red Devils are set to officially announce the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the Swede confirmed on social media yesterday that he was heading to Old Trafford.
However, there are likely to be several further new additions and as well as being in talks over a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan it seems United are also closing in on a mega deal to land Paul Pogba.
The French international has long been linked with a move back to Old Trafford after leaving the club on a free transfer in 2012 and the Telegraph claim that sources close to Juventus say United have now tabled an £80m offer for their former midfielder.
The newspaper suggests that with Champions League winners Real Madrid ready to drop out of the race having seen their £60m offer rejected, United are now clear to pull off what would be a British record purchase.
Juventus are yet to accept United’s reported bid but the Telegraph suggest that the Italian champions are expected to find the offer too good to refuse with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward due to fly out to Turin next week to try and thrash out a deal.
Even if Juve reject the £80m offer, the report claims that United may even be prepared to break the world transfer record to sign the 23-year-old – which would mean paying above the £86m Madrid splashed out on Gareth Bale.
Any negotiations could be smoothed by the fact that United have an excellent relationship with Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola – who also represents two other United targets in Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan – so it appears the two parties are set to do plenty of business this summer.
We’ll have to wait and see how things progress over the coming days but it would obviously be a sensational signing if United were able to get a deal agreed for Pogba as he’s developed in to one of the best all-round midfielders in the world since leaving England four years ago.

However, any potential deal may have to wait a little while to be completed as Pogba is currently over in France at Euro 2016 where he’s helped guide the hosts in to the quarter finals where they’ll now meet Iceland following their stunning win over England.
