The summer transfer window is now open for business so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are dealt a blow in their pursuit of Raphael Varane…
Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of Raphael Varane after the centre-back declared his intention to remain at Real Madrid for at least another season, according to the Mirror.
New boss Jose Mourinho has already been active in the transfer market after bringing in three new faces this summer including highly-rated Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly, who arrived in a big-money deal from Villarreal.
However, while Bailly is tipped to become an important player for the future, the 22-year-old has made just 51 senior club appearances and there are doubts over whether he’s ready to be a first team regular at a club like United just yet.
It’s led to speculation that Mourinho is still looking to bring in another more established central defender to play alongside Chris Smalling this season and Varane is one of several names to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Mourinho is a known admirer of the French international’s having been the man to take him to Real Madrid from Lens back in 2011 and it looked like the Portuguese coach was hoping for a reunion in England this summer.
The Mirror reported last month that Varane was unsettled at the Bernabeu after failing to hold down a regular first team place under Zinedine Zidane and they claimed that United had opened talks with Madrid about a possible deal.
However, it looks like Mourinho has been dealt a huge blow in his pursuit as Varane has now been quoted as saying by the Mirror that he’s decided to remain at Madrid and is hoping to push on to the next stage of his career this season.
“I want to stay here this year, I feel loved by the fans who want the best for me, and the best is yet to come,”
“I hope to be allowed to start afresh- I’d like to push on, to continue improving. After being at Real for five years, I want to make the next step.”
The news will be a big disappointment to United as the 23-year-old is one of the best young defenders in world football and would have been a sensational signing had the Red Devils managed to pull it off.

However, it seems Varane will now stay with Madrid meaning Mourinho is now going to have to look elsewhere if he does want to sign a top class central defender over the coming weeks.
