The summer transfer window is in full swing so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are linked with Jose Fonte…
Manchester United have opened talks with Southampton over a potential £8m deal to sign Jose Fonte and the defender has admitted he’s flattered to be linked with a move to Old Trafford, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Jose Mourinho has already brought in Eric Bailly in a big-money move from Villarreal this summer but there are concerns that the Ivory Coast youngster isn’t ready to command a regular starting role for a bid club like United just yet.
Therefore, the Portuguese coach is reportedly looking to bring in a more experienced centre-back to play alongside Chris Smalling this season and United have been linked with a whole host of names in recent weeks.
However, the Manchester Evening News are citing a report coming from ESPN that claims United have given up hope of landing Juventus’s Leanardo Bonucci and turned their attention to signing Fonte instead.
The newspaper suggests that United have now made contact with Southampton to discuss a deal to sign the 32-year-old with the Saints understood to be willing to do business at around £8m.
Fonte has talked up the possibility of moving to Old Trafford after admitting he’s flattered to be linked with a club like United. He’s quoted as saying by the MEN:
“If the interest in there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United,” he said.
“But I have a contract with Southampton, and I’m just focused on my work, to make a great season.
“I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it. But to be Manchester United’s player is a big difference.”
Fonte joined Southampton from Crystal Palace in 2010 and has helped them become an established Premier League side since securing back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship during his six-and-a-half years at St Mary’s.
The Portuguese international is now a reliable top flight centre-back and has transferred his excellent form to the international stage where he put in some outstanding displays to help Portugal win the Euro’s this summer.

It seems Mourinho is a big fan of his compatriot’s and I think Fonte would be a superb short-term addition for United if they are able to get this deal agreed before the end of the month.
