Arsenal will be looking to build on our win over Watford when we take on Southampton at the Emirates this afternoon.

After a disappointing start to the new season that saw us collect just one point from our first two games against Liverpool and Leicester, we picked up our first win with a well deserved 3-1 victory at Vicarage Road before the international break.

We’ve since strengthened our squad with two big-money signings following Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi’s arrivals just before deadline day so there should be a renewed sense of optimism around the Emirates this weekend.

Southampton haven’t enjoyed the best of starts to their new season after collecting just two points so far after drawing with Watford and Sunderland as well as losing away to Man Utd, so boss Claude Puel will be looking to pick up his first win since replacing Ronald Koeman in the summer.

Team news

Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out after failing to recover from a hamstring injury that he sustained during the opening weekend defeat to Liverpool. However, Alex Iwobi is back in contention after overcoming the thigh strain that he suffered in that same game.

Mustafi is expected to make his debut by replacing Rob Holding alongside Laurent Koscielny at the back but Perez will most likely have to make do with a place on the bench with Olivier Giroud starting up front.

Alexis Sanchez will be assessed after only returning from international duty with Chile on Thursday night but I expect the attacker to start.

Per Mertesacker, Carl Jenkinson and Danny Welbeck are still out but Gabriel returned to training today after recovering from an ankle injury.

Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand are available for selection for Southampton after recovering from injuries and are expected to start at the Emirates today.
