Manchester United will have to make do without the services of Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini for their EFL Cup quarter-final with West Ham on Wednesday after the pair picked up their fifth bookings of the season.

Pogba was shown a yellow card during Sunday’s frustrating 1-1 draw with the Hammers at Old Trafford after referee Jon Moss felt he dived following a challenge by Mark Noble.

The incident led to Jose Mourinho being sent to the stands after kicking a water bottle in protest at the decision – even though replays showed the world’s most expensive player did in fact hit the deck under no contact from the West Ham midfielder.

Pogba has already been shown yellow cards against Watford, Chelsea, Manchester City and Burnley this season so the booking yesterday is his fifth of the campaign, meaning he’ll miss Wednesday night’s visit of West Ham in the EFL Cup.

Fellaini came on as a late substitute during the draw on Sunday but the Belgian international still found time to get himself in the referees note book after being shown a yellow card for a strong challenge on Noble.

The 29-year-old has previously been booked during matches with Hull City, Manchester City, Watford and Liverpool so he too has reached the five-card thresh-hold meaning Fellaini is also suspended for the League Cup quarter final.

Michael Carrick was left out of the squad yesterday having started in United’s previous two games so you’d expect the 35-year-old to return against his former club on Wednesday night with Pogba and Fellaini ruled out.

West Ham will head back to Old Trafford for the second time in four days as they contest a place in the semi final of the EFL Cup shortly after holding United to their fourth consecutive league draw at home.
