Liverpool Team News: Klopp Confirms Double Injury Boost But Attacker Ruled Out
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed a double injury boost ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Bournemouth on Sunday but an attacker will miss the game through injury.
Liverpool will be looking to keep the pressure on at the top of the Premier League table when they take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, Jurgen Klopp has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference and he’s offered Liverpoolfc.com a team news and injury update.
The German coach has confirmed a double injury boost with the news that Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana are both expected to return to the squad this weekend.
Firmino missed the midweek League Cup victory over Leeds United after picking up a minor calf injury during the latter stages of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Sunderland last Saturday.
However, the Brazilian international is back in training and although the calf is still causing him pain and he’ll need to be assessed at Melwood today, Klopp says the attacker is ‘tough’ so it sounds as though he’ll be available to take on Bournemouth.
There was more good news regarding the fitness of Adam Lallana as the midfielder also returned to full training on Thursday after recovering from a groin injury that he sustained while away with England during the international break last month.
Klopp says the 28-year-old was looking good in training yesterday but the midfielder will also be assessed to see how he reacts to the session before his availability this weekend is determined.
Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com:
“There will be a few changes, probably. I’m happy about each player that is back in training.
“Adam has been training since Thursday; yesterday was the first session and he looked good. We need to see how he reacts to the intensity of the training yesterday – it was quite intense for him, I think, but all good. Having him back is cool.
“Roberto trained yesterday, too. That’s important. There’s still a little bit of pain – it’s painful but not that serious. When you can deal with the pain, then everything is fine. He is quite a tough guy, so he came through the session yesterday. Again, we have to see how he reacts and that’s it.”
It will be a huge boost for Liverpool if Lallana and Firmino are passed fit to play this weekend as both players have been key parts of Klopp’s starting eleven this season.
Firmino in particular will be needed on Sunday as Klopp also confirmed to the clubs official website today that Daniel Sturridge will once again miss the trip to the south coast as he continues to nurse a calf injury that’s seen him miss the last two games.
Klopp is set to make wholesale changes to the squad that beat Leeds in the League Cup in midweek as Liverpool head to Bournemouth sitting second in the table and just one point adrift of leaders Chelsea.
