Arsenal Players Stunned By Wenger’s Controversial Selection Decision For Bayern

Arsenal players have been stunned by Arsene Wenger’s decision to stick with David Ospina ahead of Petr Cech for their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, according to the Mirror.
The boss persuaded Ospina to stay at the club last summer by promising him he would play in the Champions League and the Colombian international started in all six of our group stage games.
To be fair, Ospina performed well and played a key role in helping us progress as group winners but it was still understood that Wenger would revise his goalkeeping options when we got to the knockout stages of the competition.
After we drew Bayern Munich, many thought the boss may decide to revert back to our No.1 and start Petr Cech for what has become arguably our biggest game of the season.
However, the Mirror claim that Wenger has decided to stick with Ospina for tomorrow night’s trip to the Allianz Arena for the first leg of our Champions League last-16 tie.
The newspaper says the decision has left many senior players at the club shocked as Cech is one of our biggest and most experienced characters in the dressing room, not to mention he’s the only member of the squad with a Champions League winners medal.
Given his status, the report says that many Arsenal players assumed Wenger would recall Cech for the Champions League knockout stages but have been surprised now that Ospina has been given the nod.
It’s certainly a huge call to make and given Cech’s questionable form this season, I don’t think too many fans will be disappointed to see Ospina starting against Bayern.
My only question is, if Wenger thinks Ospina is good enough to start away to one of the best teams in Europe then why isn’t he starting in ALL big games, not just in the Champions League?
I understand promising Ospina he’ll play in the group stages but you have to go with your best keeper when you get to the business end of the competition, especially when we’ve been drawn to face a team like Bayern.
So if Wenger sees Ospina as the man for the job tomorrow night, then he should be made our No.1 keeper and replace Cech in the Premier League too. If not, then this is just another example of Wenger putting a players needs before Arsenal.
