Managers are now making plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Jose Mourinho responds to reported interested in Neymar…
Jose Mourinho has played down reports suggesting Manchester United are plotting a £173m swoop for Neymar after insisting it’s ‘impossible’ to sign the Barcelona forward, according to a report in the Mirror.
Neymar has developed in to one of the best players on the planet since joining Barca from Santos in 2013 with his 99 goals and 76 assists helping the Catalan giants to a whole host of honours including 2 La Liga titles and the Champions League.
Understandably, any club in the world would want Neymar and earlier this week the Daily Mail cited a report from Sport that claimed United were eyeing a sensational move for the Brazilian international this summer.
The Spanish outlet suggested that United were prepared to meet Neymar’s £173m release clause and offer him £21m-per-season in wages to make a move to Old Trafford at the end of the season.
However, Mourinho has now played down these reports after describing the Neymar links as ‘absurd’ and insisting that it would be ‘impossible’ to lure the forward away from the Nou Camp as he’s the natural successor to Lionel Messi’s crown at Barcelona.
Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“I always try to be objective and pragmatic with the clubs and ask the clubs for what can be given to me. Neymar is absurd,”
“A club like Barcelona cannot and will not lose Neymar. Although Messi is still a young player with years to go, he is already 30, and Neymar will be the great player of Barcelona after Messi.
“I think [trying to sign him is like] going to try to break into a safe – impossible.”
Mourinho is expected to be extremely active in the summer transfer market as he looks to turn United in to genuine title challengers next season following an inconsistent first season in charge.
Obviously United fans would be delighted to see the club go for a player of Neymar’s quality but it appears Mourinho has already resigned himself to the fact it will be impossible to prise him away from Barcelona.

The Portuguese coach is expected to bring in a new forward this summer with Wayne Rooney set to leave and Zlatan Ibrahimovic yet to sign a new contract but it looks as though United won’t be wasting their time pursuing a deal for Neymar.
