Liverpool and Manchester United are ready to go head-to-head over the signing of £33m-rated Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez this summer, according to the Express.
Gimenez has emerged as one of the most highly-rated defenders in Spanish football since breaking in to Atletico’s first team set-up last season having joined the club from Danubio in 2013.
However, the 22-year-old has lost his place in Diego Simone’s starting eleven in recent months and was left out of key games against Real Madrid and Leicester City over the past week.
Understandably, the youngsters uncertain situation at the Vicente Calderon has alerted clubs here in England and the Express are citing reports coming from Spain that claim Liverpool and Man Utd are now ready to try and lure Giminez to the Premier League.
The newspaper report indicates that both Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho are determined to land the Uruguayan international this summer but will have to meet Atletico’s £33m asking price.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool or United will be prepared to match that figure but both clubs have the financial resources to pay that sort of money if they really wanted to, especially United.
Klopp is expected to bring in a new central defender this summer as Liverpool have shipped too many goals this season and a player of Gimenez’s quality would certainly strengthen their back line ahead of the Merseysiders likely return to the Champions League.
Mourinho is also gearing up for a busy summer window with a new centre-back on the agenda and while Victor Lindelof has been strongly linked in the past, the Express suggest that Gimenez is now the United bosses preferred target.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming months but if the South American defender continues to be out-of-favour in Madrid during the closes stages of the season, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see him look for a move in search of regular football and a switch to England could be on the cards.
