Manchester United are ready to battle-it-out with Liverpool and Tottenham over the signing of Burnley’s £30m-rated defender Michael Keane this summer, according to the Telegraph.
Keane has developed in to one of the best young centre-back in British football in recent years and has been a huge success since joining Burnley from United for £2m in 2015 after initially impressing on loan.
The 24-year-old has played a key role in helping Sean Dyche’s side try to maintain their top flight status while he also earned his first cap for the senior England team after making his debut against Germany last month.
The defender has attracted interest from several clubs with the Mirror carrying a report earlier this week stating that Liverpool were confident they were in pole position ahead of Tottenham to secure a deal this summer.
Jurgen Klopp needs to strengthen his options at the back as Liverpool’s leaky defence has been their downfall for much of the season and Keane would be an excellent addition if they could lure him to Anfield.
Mauricio Pochettino is also showing a keen interest in the centre-back as he looks to strengthen the Tottenham squad ahead of their imminent return to the Champions League next season.
However, the Telegraph claim that Jose Mourinho is ready to spark a bidding war between the three clubs after also identifying Keane as a prime target as he looks to add to the British core at Old Trafford.
United have seen their options at centre-back decimated in recent weeks with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo all sidelined but you’d expect at least one of those three to leave this summer as Mourinho continues to rebuild his squad.
The newspaper says the Portuguese coach wants to resign Keane just two years after Louis van Gaal sold the defender and the fact United have a 25% sell-on clause means they’ll be able to secure a deal at a discount compared to their rivals.

Burnley are resigned to losing the defender this summer but the Telegraph claim they will demand around £30m for his signature, so any of the interested parties will need to be prepared to dig deep.
It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how things develop over the coming weeks but Keane looks to have a huge future ahead of him so I think he’s destined to move to a bigger club this summer, and it looks like he’ll have plenty of options.
