Chelsea and Liverpool are set to do-battle over the signature of Ryan Bertrand after the full-back decided he wants to leave Southampton at the end of the season, according to the Mirror.
Bertrand came through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge but spent several years out on loan at various clubs after struggling to establish himself in the first team set-up.
The left-back sealed a permanent switch to Southampton in 2015 after spending the previous year on loan at St Marys and Bertrand has developed in to one of the best full-backs in the Premier League over the last two years.
The 27-year-old has been outstanding down the flank for the Saints while he’s also established himself on the international stage having become a regular with the England national team.
However, the Mirror claim that Bertrand is set to become the latest player to leave Southampton after informing team mates that he will push for a move at the end of the season.
The report says the news has alerted Chelsea and Liverpool with the English heavy-weights now ready to go head-to-head over a deal to sign Bertrand this summer.
Blues boss Antonio Conte needs to bring in competition for Marcos Alonso in the left wing-back role and it appears the Italian coach is hoping to lure Bertrand back to west London.
Liverpool are also in the market for a left-sided defender as Jurgen Klopp desperately needs a long-term solution after being forced to use James Milner as a make-shift full-back for much of the campaign.
Bertrand would be an ideal signing for the Merseysiders and we all know they love to buy players from Southampton with Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren all making the move to Anfield in recent years.

However, Bertrand still lives in the London area so that could make Chelsea favourites if the defender is open to the idea of returning to Stamford Bridge having previously failed to hold down a place with the champions-elect.
