Liverpool are confident of beating Manchester United to the signing of Michael Keane after agreeing personal terms ahead of a potential £25m switch from Burnley this summer, according to the Mirror.
Keane has developed in to one of the best young centre-backs in English football since joining Burnley in a £2.5m deal from United back in 2015 having initially impressed on loan and was shortlisted for the 2017 PFA Young Player of the Year award.
The 24-year-old has played a key role in helping Sean Dyche’s side maintain their Premier League status for another season while he also earned his first cap for the senior England team after making his debut against Germany back in March.
The 6ft 4″ defender has attracted interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League with the Telegraph reporting last month that Liverpool and Man Utd are among the clubs to have shown a keen interest.
However, the Mirror claim that Liverpool beleive they are in pole position to secure a deal for Keane this summer after Jurgen Klopp made him his No.1 centre-back target.
The newspaper says that personal terms in principle have now been agreed between Liverpool and Keane’s representatives but any deal is dependent on the Reds securing Champions League football.
Klopp desperately needs to strengthen his defensive options this summer as they’ve leaked far too many goals to mount a serious title challenge and Keane would be an excellent addition for the Merseysiders.
However, I wouldn’t discount United just yet as Keane remains a boyhood fan and the Mirror claim he would still jump at the chance of rejoining his former club if they were to make a formal offer.
Jose Mourinho is gearing up for a busy summer in the transfer market and the report says he has identified Keane as a potential long-term partner for Eric Bailly in the middle of defence but United are yet to cement their interest.

Keane has just one year remaining on his contract and has so far refused to sign a new deal at Turf Moor but the Mirror say Burnley will still demand £25m for his signature – although United should get a substantial discount as they have a 25% sell-on clause in his deal.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I think Keane would be a great signing for either Liverpool or United if they end up getting a deal agreed this summer.
