Manchester United have beaten off competition from Chelsea after agreeing a £60m deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos this summer, according to a report in the Express.
Jose Mourinho is gearing-up for a busy few months in the transfer window after a disappointing Premier League campaign saw the Manchester giants finish a lowly sixth in the table.
United could still end the season on a high by winning the Europa League and in turn qualifying for the Champions League but the Portuguese coach knows he needs to strengthen if the Red Devils are to be serious contenders next season.
A new dominant centre-back to play alongside Eric Bailly at the back is seemingly a priority and Marquinhos has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months.
The Sun reported just last week that United were due to meet with the Brazilian international’s agent after Mourinho set his sights on luring Marquinhos away from PSG.
It looks like the meeting must have gone well as the Express are citing a report coming from Catalan newspaper Sport that claims United have now sealed a £60m deal to land Marquinhos.
The report suggests that United have beaten off competition from Chelsea and Antonio Conte has now been forced to switch his attention to other targets after learning that the 23-year-old was set for Old Trafford.
Conte is on the look out for a replacement for John Terry after the long-serving skipper called time on his career at Stamford Bridge but it looks as though the Blues boss has missed out on the signing of Marquinhos.
If this report is accurate and the South American does end up joining United for £60m, then Marquinhos will become the most expensive defender in the world – eclipsing the £50m PSG paid to sign David Luiz in 2014.
I think it would be a superb piece of business by United as Marquinhos is one of the best young defenders in the world and he has the potential to form a rock solid partnership alongside Bailly over the coming years.

However, his arrival at United will cast further doubt over the future’s of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones as at least one of the centre-back’s is expected to leave this summer.
