Manchester United are ready to go head-to-head with Tottenham over the signing of Ryan Sessegnon after Liverpool pulled out of the race to land the £15m Fulham defender, according to the Mirror.
Sessegnon has developed in to one of the hottest properties outside of the Premier League after enjoying a breakthrough campaign at Craven Cottage last season that saw him score 7 goals in 31 appearances.
The 17-year-old has been with Fulham since he was just nine-years-old and established himself in the first team last season after progressing through the youth system and has also represented England at youth level.
However, Sessegnon’s future at Fulham is in serious doubt as he’s yet to sign a professional contract and the talented teenager has been strongly linked with a number of Premier League clubs.
Liverpool were reportedly among those showing a keen interest as Jurgen Klopp is in desperate need of a long-term replacement for James Milner at left-back with Alberto Moreno set to leave Anfield this summer.
However, the Liverpool Echo claim that Liverpool have been forced to pull out of the race to sign Sessegnon as they believe he wants to join Tottenham after holding talks with the players representatives.
Spurs have been strongly linked with the full-back as Mauricio Pochettino looks to further strengthen his squad ahead of the north Londoners return to the Champions League and it appeared they were in pole position to land Sessegnon.
However, it looks like Tottenham could yet face some stiff competition as the Mirror claim that Manchester United are ready to battle-it-out with their rivals over Sessegnon’s signature this summer.
Jose Mourinho is in the market for a new left-back amid on-going doubts over the future of Luke Shaw after the former Southampton star failed to establish himself under the ‘Special One’ last season.
Shaw could have the chance to revive his career at Old Trafford if United end up signing Sessegnon as the teenager is highly unlikely to come in as a first team regular, but Mourinho could also be looking to sign a more established left-back as well which would leave Shaw out in the cold.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but the Mirror claim that whoever wins the race for Sessegnon’s signature will have to pay £15m in compensation to Fulham for developing the defender.
