Chelsea are ready to try and hijack Manchester United’s attempts to sign £70m-rated Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata this summer, according to a report in the Express.
Morata is expected to leave the Bernabeu after struggling to hold down a regular spot since re-joining Madrid last summer following a successful two-year stint in Italy with Juventus.
The 24-year-old was handed just 16 starts by Zinedine Zidane last season so speculation has intensified that he’s actively looking to leave in search of regular football ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
Man Utd have been strongly linked with a move for Morata this summer after Jose Mourinho identified the Spanish hitman as the ideal replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Express claim that United have been locked in negotiations with Madrid trying to thrash out a deal with the Spanish giants demanding £70m after rejecting United’s opening £60m offer.
The newspaper is now quoting Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli as telling Sport Review that the proposed deal is stalling as the two clubs are struggling to agree terms over agents fees.
And the impasse has left the door open for Chelsea as Giulianelli says the Blues are now ready to hijack United’s move and Morata is understood to be open to the idea of working under Antonio Conte.
Conte played a key role in luring Morata to Juve before leaving to take the Italy job and the Blues boss needs to bring in a replacement for Diego Costa after informing the Brazilian-born striker that he’s no longer in his plans for next season.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Chelsea do try and hijack United’s deal but I think Morata would be an excellent signing for either club if they could get a deal agreed with Madrid for his signature.

Despite his lack of starts last season, the talented striker still managed to score an impressive 20 goals and he has the potential to become one of the best strikers in Europe if he’s given a more prominent role at Chelsea or United.
