Chelsea are on the verge of beating Manchester United to the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko with the midfielder due to undergo his medical in London after a £40m deal was agreed with Monaco, according to a report in the Express.
Bakayoko has forged a reputation as one of the best midfielders in France since joining Monaco in 2014 and he played a starring role as Leonardo Jardim’s side won the Ligue 1 title last season.
The 22-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea this summer but his proposed switch has been held up due to concerns over a knee injury while the Blues have also been struggling to agree a fee with Monaco.
The delay left the door open for United and the Mirror reported earlier this week that the Red Devils were ready to try and hijack Chelsea’s attempts to sign Bakayoko.
Jose Mourinho is in the market for a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick and Bakayoko is one of several central midfielders to be linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.
The Express say there was a real fear in west London that United could gazump them again after snatching Romelu Lukaku from under Chelsea’s nose and it seems this has promoted the Blues to act swiftly.
The newspaper is citing a report coming from RMC Sport that claims Bakayoko is en route to London to finalise the move after Chelsea finally agreed a £40m deal with Monaco late last night.
The French outlet says the midfielder will undergo his medical on Friday before signing a five-year contract so it looks as though Bakayoko is set to become Antonio Conte’s third major addition of the summer.
Conte has already wrapped-up deals for goalkeeper Willy Caballero and centre-back Antonio Rudiger but securing Bakayoko will come as a huge relief to the Chelsea boss.

The French international is expected to line-up alongside compatriot N’Golo Kante next season and his arrival will cast further doubt over the future of Nemanja Matic – who’s been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
