Liverpool have been given fresh hope they could yet sign Virgil van Dijk after the defender told Southampton he wants to secure a move to Anfield this summer, according to a report in the Mirror.
Van Dijk became one of the most sought-after players in the summer transfer window after developing in to arguably the best centre-back in the Premier League since joining Southampton from Celtic in 2015.
The 26-year-old looked set for a £60m move to Liverpool [via the Mirror] earlier this summer but the proposed switch collapsed after the Saints complained to the FA regarding the Merseysiders conduct.
Liverpool were forced to issue a public apology and vowed to end their pursuit but speculation in recent weeks has suggested that Jurgen Klopp is still hoping the deal could be resurrected.
It seems the German coach has every reason to be hopeful as the Mirror are citing a report from The Sun that claims van Dijk has now informed Southampton he still wants to join Liverpool this summer.
The newspaper says the centre-back is keen to play for the Anfield giants in the Champions League and is now ready to take matters in to his own hands to secure a transfer.
Southampton have been defiant that they won’t sell van Dijk this summer but it will be difficult for them to maintain that stance if the player is now clearly agitating for a move.
Boss Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed that van Dijk has been training alone after making it clear he wants to leave [via the BBC] so it seems like it’s only a matter of time before he joins Liverpool.

Klopp knows he needs to strengthen his defence if Liverpool are to be considered as genuine title contenders and a partnership of van Dijk and Joel Matip would be a match for any team in the division.
We’ll have to wait and see how things progress but I think the defender will eventually get his move and I wouldn’t bet against van Dijk being a Liverpool player next season.
