Gareth Bale is threatening to join Manchester United this summer if Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane overlooks him at the start of the new season, according to a report in the Express.
Bale has continued to forge a reputation as one of the best attackers in Europe since joining Madrid from Tottenham in 2013 for a then world-record £86m.
The Welsh international has scored 67 goals and provided a further 51 assists in his 149 appearances to help Madrid win three Champions League trophies and a La Liga title during his four years at the club.
However, Bale’s future has been cast in doubt in recent weeks as speculation is growing that Zidane may be willing to sacrifice the 28-year-old to help fund Madrid’s pursuit of Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe.
This has led to some reports suggesting Bale could join Man Utd this month but the Express reported last week that Jose Mourinho was plotting a £90m swoop to sign the former Spurs attacker next summer.
United have been long term admirers of Bale and it seems like Mourinho was willing to wait 12 months before launching his move to sign him after already spending around £150m this window.
However, it looks like the Red Devils could bring their plans forward as the Express are now citing a report from Diario Gol that claims Bale is ready to push for a move to Old Trafford if Zidane overlooks him during the opening stages of this season.
Bale endured a frustrating campaign last year as he was restricted to making just 26 appearances due to hamstring and calf injuries and even though he returned to fitness in time for the Champions League final, Zidane opted to start Isco against Juventus with Bale on the bench.
Isco impressed during Bale’s absence during the closing stages of last season and Bale’s position would be under even greater threat should Mbappe arrive from Monaco.
And the report suggests that Bale is threatening to force a move to United before the window closes if Zidane doesn’t make it clear he’s integral to his first team plans during the opening games of this season.
Bale would be a marquee signing for United and would be considered one of the ‘main men’ in Mourinho’s starting eleven if he did move to Old Trafford so you can appreciate why he may be tempted.

United are one of the few clubs who could realistically afford to buy the Welsh super-star and Mourinho has confirmed he’s in the market for another attacker so you’d assume he’d jump at the chance of signing Bale if he made it clear he wanted out of the Bernabeu.
However, we should wait and see whether Bale is selected by Zidane during the opening weeks of the new campaign before we get too excited about seeing him in the Premier League any time soon.
