Liverpool appear to be closing-in on another signing after reaching a verbal agreement with Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic over a move to Anfield this summer, according to a report in the Daily Star.
Kovacic has struggled to hold down a regular first team place at the Bernabeu since joining Madrid from Inter Milan two years ago with the midfielder making just 19 starts last season.
The 23-year-old’s chances of breaking in to Zinedine Zidane’s plans don’t look any better this campaign as the likes of Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Isco, Marco Asensio and Dani Ceballos are all competing for places.
It’s led to speculation that Kovacic will be on the move before the transfer window closes as he looks to secure more regular first team football ahead of the 2018 World Cup finals.
It looks like a move to the Premier League could be on the cards as the Daily Star are citing a report from Diario Gol that claims Kovacic has now reached a verbal agreement to join Liverpool this summer.
The Spanish outlet suggest the Croatian international may have been viewed as a potential replacement for Philippe Coutinho but I think it’s far more likely Jurgen Klopp wants to add Kovacic to his current group of players.
The Reds boss has been trying to sign another central midfielder all summer and has been looking at other targets after failing to sign RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita so I think Kovacic is viewed as an alternative to the Guinea international. Plus, it looks like Liverpool have fended off interest from Barcelona in Coutinho so the Brazilian international is going nowhere.
Kovacic is a specialist central midfielder so the former Dinamo Zagreb star will offer competition to the likes of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum if he does end up moving to Anfield.
The report doesn’t give any indication as to how much Madrid are demanding to sell Kovacic or whether Liverpool may be looking for a loan deal but I think he’d be an excellent piece of business if the Reds can get this transfer over the line.

Klopp has already signed Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Dominic Solanke so far this summer so Kovacic would become Liverpool’s fourth major addition if he completes this proposed move.
