Chelsea are closing-in on a £55m double swoop for Danny Drinkwater and Antonio Candreva as Antonio Conte kicks-off his late summer spending spree, according to the Mirror.

Conte has made no secret of his desire to further strengthen before the end of the month as the Chelsea boss knows his threadbare squad isn’t capable of competing on all fronts this season.

The Blues hierarchy have given Conte assurances they will back him with a late splurge in the transfer market and it looks like the Premier League champions are now working hard on their first two new recruits.

A new central midfielder is on the agenda after Nemanja Matic joined Manchester United and the Mirror claim Chelsea are hoping to wrap-up a £30m deal for Drinkwater over the coming days.

The Blues saw their opening £15m immediately rejected and while Leicester have been demanding close to £40m, the newspaper says Chelsea are hoping a compromise will be reached at £30m as the player is understood to be keen to secure a move to west London.

Drinkwater enjoyed an excellent partnership alongside N’Golo Kante during Leicester’s title-winning campaign so it looks like the 27-year-old is ready to be reunited with the Frenchman at Stamford Bridge.

The Mirror claim Chelsea are also in talks to sign Candreva and a £25m deal with Inter Milan has been lined-up with Conte simply needing to give the green light for the transfer to be completed.

Conte knows the 30-year-old well from their time together with the Italian national team and Candreva is capable of playing on either wing or in the wing-back role so he’ll give the Blues boss plenty of options if he does complete his move.

The versatile midfielder only joined Inter from Lazio last summer and he enjoyed a solid campaign having provided 8 goals and 11 assists but it seems his time at the San Siro may now be coming to a premature end.
