Liverpool To Bid £18m For International Star As Klopp Plots Late Swoop
Liverpool are set to table an £18m bid for Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes as Jurgen Klopp looks to bring in a centre-back before the end of the month
Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final weeks of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Liverpool are linked with Benedikt Howedes….
Liverpool are set to table an £18m bid for Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes as Jurgen Klopp looks to bring in a centre-back before the end of the month, according to the Express.
Klopp has been in the market for defensive reinforcements all summer and a deal initially looked to be on the cards for Virgil van Dijk after the Reds made him their number one target.
However, that proposed move was derailed when Southampton reported Liverpool to the Premier League for ‘tapping up’ and the South Coast club are now refusing to sell their captain despite van Dijk handing in a transfer request.
It looks like Liverpool are now ready to move on to alternative targets as the Express are citing a report from DW Sports that claims Klopp has set his sights on Schalke centre-back Howedes.
The German publication says Liverpool are ready to formalise their interest with an £18m offer as Klopp looks to try and get the deal over the line before the window shuts next week.
Howedes has been with Schalke his entire career having progressed through their youth system and he’s gone on to make over 330 appearances for the first team over the past decade.
However, the 29-year-old has cast doubt over his long term future at the club after admitting he’s tempted by a move abroad and says he’s already got offers on the table.
Howedes is quoted as saying by the Express.
“I’ve said I won’t move within [Germany] and can picture a move abroad. As of today, that point in time hasn’t come.”
“I received offers from other clubs after the surprising demotion from captain… that my agent checked and answered.”
The German international would bring some much-needed quality and experience to the Liverpool back-line if he made a move to Anfield so I think he’d be an excellent signing for the Reds.

Howedes knows Joel Matip extremely well as they played alongside each other at Schalke for seven years before the Cameroon star joined Liverpool last summer and it looks like they could be reunited this summer.
