Arsenal Team News: 6 Players Set To Return Against Tottenham But Duo Remain Doubts
Arsenal are set to welcome back six first team players for this weekend’s clash with Tottenham but two Frenchman are doubts for the game.
Arsenal are set to welcome back six first team players for this weekend’s clash with Tottenham but two Frenchman are doubts for the game, according to Football London.
Arsene Wenger has had to deal with his fair share of injury problems in recent weeks with Danny Welbeck among those who’ve spent time on the sidelines.
The England international limped off during the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat at Watford a month ago after picking up a groin strain and has been forced to miss the last six games in all competitions.
However, Welbeck is back in full training and is expected to be available for selection when Tottenham arrive at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.
David Ospina is also set to return to the squad after recovering from his own groin problem that’s kept him out for the past month – although a place on the bench is probably the best he can hope for this weekend.
Calum Chambers has endured a frustration campaign having aggravated a hip injury during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup win over Doncaster in September – which is his only appearance of the season so far.
However, the centre-back is also in full training again and should be available to face Spurs but the England youngster will do well to force his way in to Wenger’s 18-man match-day squad.
That’s because the Gunners boss is set to welcome Per Mertesacker back in to the fold after the German legend recovered from an illness that kept him out of the defeat to Manchester City before the international break while Rob Holding is also due back from a thigh injury.
Arsenal’s options at centre-back are further increased as Shkodran Mustafi is expected to be back in contention after finally overcoming a groin injury that he picked up six weeks ago.
The German international sustained the injury while away with his country at the start of October but he’s set to return to action against Tottenham on Saturday lunchtime.
Mustafi’s availability could be well-timed as Laurent Koscielny has emerged as a doubt for the North London Derby after missing training with France this week due to his troublesome Achilles problem.
Koscielny has nursed the injury for the past two years and seems to have aggravated it during France’s win over Wales on Friday so it remains to be seen whether he’ll be fit to face Spurs this weekend.
Wenger also has a doubt hanging over Olivier Giroud after the striker was released from the French squad and sent back to north London to be further assessed after picking up a thigh injury against Wales.
Giroud will be monitored over the coming days by the Arsenal medical staff but he is considered as a major doubt to take on Tottenham so Wenger may have one less option to call upon in attack.
