Arsene Wenger has offered an update on Mesut Ozil after the playmaker missed Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor this afternoon.
Ozil was fully expected to return to the starting eleven against Burnley after being rested for our Europa League group stage defeat to Cologne on Thursday night.
It therefore came as a surprise when the German international’s name was omitted from the squad when the team sheets were announced an hour before kick off.
It soon emerged that Ozil missed today’s game due to illness and Wenger has now confirmed that the playmaker was at the team hotel but was forced to travel back to London after feeling unwell this morning.
The boss says he is yet to see the 29-year-old so will have to wait and see how serious the issue is but feels Ozil may be ‘short’ for the game against Huddersfield at the Emirates in midweek.
Wenger is quoted as saying by the Metro:
‘I haven’t seven seen him. The doctor came to see me and said he had to travel back home, he was in the hotel with us.’
‘Certainly he will be short for Wednesday. We will see what it is exactly’
We’ll have to wait and see how Ozil recovers over the coming days but let’s hope he manages to overcome his illness in time to face Huddersfield as it would be a blow to be without him again on Wednesday night.
We missed Ozil’s creativity in the final third today as we struggled to create clear cut chances but thankfully we still found a way to claim all three points as Alexis Sanchez scored a late penalty after Aaron Ramsey was pushed in the area.
