Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score twice as Chelsea came from two goals down to beat Southampton 3-2 in a thriller at St Mary’s this afternoon.
Southampton got off to the perfect start as they opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Dustan Tadic tapped home from close range following some great work from Ryan Bertrand down the left.
The hosts looked to be heading towards a vital three points when debutante Jan Bednarek fired home at the far post from a 60th minute free-kick to make it 2-0 midway through the second half.
However, Giroud came off the bench to halve the deficit in the 70th minute with a fine header before Eden Hazard kept a cool head to level things up five minutes later following some good work from Willian.
A stunning turnaround was complete when Giroud fired home from 12 yards after Southampton failed to clear their lines to make it three Chelsea goals in a stunning eight minute spell.
The Saints couldn’t find a late equaliser so Chelsea held on to secure a 3-2 victory which sees them close the gap on fourth placed Tottenham to seven points ahead of their clash with Man City tonight.
