Tottenham Join Liverpool In Chase To Sign £30m Premier League Star

Tottenham Hotspur have joined Liverpool in showing a keen interest in signing Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer

The summer transfer window is now open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Spurs are linked with Alex McCarthy…

Tottenham Hotspur have joined Liverpool in showing a keen interest in signing Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer, according to the Mirror.

McCarthy has enjoyed a well-travelled career so far and initially struggled to secure regular first team football after joining Southampton from Crystal Palace in a £2.5m deal in 2016.

However, McCarthy was hugely impressive during the second half of last season after he ousted Fraser Forster as the Saint’s No.1 and he played a key role in helping the South Coast club avoid relegation to the Championship.

The 28-year-old’s form caught the eye of several top flight clubs with TeamTalk reporting earlier this month that Liverpool were among those eyeing a surprise swoop for McCarthy this summer.

Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new No.1 to compete with Loris Karius and while they’ve been linked with big-money moves for the likes of Alisson Becker and Jan Oblak, McCarthy emerged as a cheaper alternative.

TeamTalk’s report suggested that Southampton valued the England U21 international at around £30m – which is at least £40m less than Liverpool would need to pay to land Alisson or Oblak.

However, the Reds may face competition as the Mirror claim that Tottenham are now also keeping a close eye on McCarthy’s situation as Mauricio Pochettino looks for potential replacement for Michel Vorm.

The Dutch international is out of contract this summer and is a target for a number of clubs so the newspaper says Pochettino is considering a move for McCarthy as he looks for a reliable back-up for Hugo Lloris.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but as McCarthy has just one year remaining on his contract I think Southampton will end up cash-in for a lot less than £30m if the keeper decides to move-on again this summer.

He’d be a solid replacement for Vorm at Tottenham but I don’t think McCarthy has the required quality to challenge Karius for a first team place at Anfield so Liverpool should be aiming higher for a new No.1.
