Paul Merson is predicting a tough time for Arsenal this weekend with the Sky Sports pundit backing Liverpool to run-out 3-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow evening.
Arsenal recently won 11 games on the spin and are unbeaten in 13 matches in all competitions so they should certainly be in confident mood heading in to this weekend’s action. That run has left the Gunners sitting fourth in the Premier League and just four points adrift of joint-leaders Liverpool so they are right in the mix at the top of the table.
However, Merson hasn’t been impressed with Arsenal, despite their excellent results, as the Sky Sports pundit claims his former side could easily have lost several games in recent weeks and believes they remain ‘all over the place’ in defence.
With Unai Emery sweating over the fitness of Nacho Monreal, Sead Kolasinac, Sokratis and Hector Bellerin, Arsenal could field a severely weakened back four tomorrow and Merson thinks Liverpool are going to take advantage.
Added to Arsenal’s problems at the back, Merson highlighted that the north Londoners will also struggle to score goals at the other end as Liverpool’s defence has been superb this season so he’s predicting the Merseysiders to secure a 3-1 win tomorrow.
Writing in his column on SkySports.com, Merson said:
Arsenal vs Liverpool, Saturday 5.30pm
I can’t see anything but a Liverpool win. I think this is the day Arsenal show some big cracks.
I just think the defence is terrible, all over the place, and no different to what it was before. If Hector Bellerin is injured, you’re talking about Granit Xhaka at left-back, a central midfield player, and Stephan Lichtsteiner at right-back, who has been a good player but is nearly 35 now. How many 35-year-old’s are there in the Premier League?
We saw Leicester rip Arsenal to shreds for 30 minutes; they scored, Harry Maguire missed a sitter, they had a stonewall penalty turned down. Leicester’s front three aren’t even in the same class as Liverpool’s. I just cannot see how Arsenal will live with them.
People will say: ‘Oh Arsenal will score goals…’ but Liverpool’s defence has been superb. I watched Arsenal win 11 games on the trot, and they could have easily lost four of them, let alone drawn them.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-3
It’s certainly going to be a tough test for Arsenal tomorrow, especially if they have several defenders missing, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Emery’s side cope against a top class Liverpool outfit.
