From Italy: Liverpool join Man Utd & Tottenham in race to sign £26m attacker

Liverpool have joined Manchester United and Tottenham in the race to sign £26m-rated PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn, according to CalcioMercato.

Bergwijn is fast becoming one of the most sought-after youngsters in European football after developing in to a key player for PSV since breaking in to their first team set-up having progressed through their youth ranks.

The 21-year-old has provided 9 goals and 9 assists in his 17 Eredivisie appearances so far this season while he’s also broken in to the Dutch senior national team with two caps to his name so far.

The youngsters potential has caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League with The Sun reporting recently that Man Utd and Tottenham are in a battle with a number of other European clubs to sign Bergwijn.

Mauricio Pochettino is under pressure to strengthen his squad after losing Harry Kane and Dele Alli to injury but the newspaper suggested that United were the front runners to sign Bergwijn after sending scouts to watch him during PSV’s 2-2 draw at Emmen last weekend.

However, it seems Spurs and United will face further competition for his signature as CalcioMercato claims Liverpool are also showing a keen interest in signing Bergwijn along with Serie A giants Inter Milan.

The Italian outlet says PSV want around £26m for the attackers signature and Liverpool could now rival the likes of United and Tottenham for a deal after scouting the player heavily over the past year [source: Express]

Jurgen Klopp already has Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri on his books but the Liverpool boss needs to add more depth out wide after seeing his side crash out during the early stages of both domestic cups this season.

Bergwijn is a pacey, two-footed winger who is comfortable on either flank so he’d be a very useful addition at Anfield but Liverpool will need to fend off Man Utd, Tottenham and others if they want to land the talented attacker.
