Manchester United are eyeing a swoop for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez after giving up hope of signing top target Jadon Sancho this summer, according to ESPN.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be extremely busy in the transfer market over the coming weeks as he looks to strengthen his squad after finishing sixth in the Premier League this season and Sancho has been touted as a prime target for some time.

However, ESPN claim that Man Utd have now given up hope of luring the talented youngster to Old Trafford this summer as talks with Borussia Dortmund have gone nowhere with the Bundesliga giants determined to hang on to Sancho for at least another year.

The report says it would take an offer of at least £80m to even get Dortmund to the negotiating table and United are now moving on to alternative targets as they feel that kind of money is too expensive for the 19-year-old.

Man Utd will continue to monitor Sancho’s situation and would renew their interest if Dortmund’s position changed but for now they are turning their attention elsewhere and ESPN claim Niguez has emerged as a target.

The 24-year-old has been a key player for Atletico Madrid in recent years having progressed through their youth ranks and he provided 6 goals and 3 assists to help Diego Simeone’s men finish second in the La Liga table this season.

Niguez is also a regular with the Spanish national team and is a versatile player as he’s comfortable playing in central midfield or on either wing so he’d give Solskjaer plenty of options if he ends up moving to Old Trafford.

ESPN’s report says United’s interest is yet to be formalised but the Spaniard is on Solskjaer’s radar along with the likes of Swansea City winger Daniel James and Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

James and Longstaff are two youngsters with huge potential but Niguez is far more established at the highest level so you’d expect Atletico will demand a sizable fee to sell the player this summer.
