Manchester United are ready to make a move for Ajax’s £40m-rated goalkeeper Andre Onana if they’re forced to cash-in on David De Gea this summer, according to the Independent.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be busy in the market over the coming weeks as he looks to build a squad capable of competing for top honours again next season following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish sixth in the league.
Goalkeeper is a position that’s become something of a concern this summer as De Gea has just one year remaining on his current contract and has shown no sign that he’s ready to sign an extension any time soon.
United will reportedly make one final attempt to agree a new deal with the Spaniard but if De Gea refuses to commit his future to the club then they may be forced to cash-in rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.
It appears Solskjaer is already planning for life without his No.1 as United have been linked with several goalkeepers in recent weeks and Jan Oblak has been touted as a potential replacement for De Gea.
However, the Independent claims United are highly unlikely to pursue a deal for the Atletico Madrid star due to his £100m price-tag so they’ve turned their attention to Ajax stopper Andre Onana.
The newspaper says Man Utd have made the Cameroonian international their first choice target should De Gea leave this summer with the Ajax goalkeeper available at around £40m – significantly less than Oblak would cost.
Onana has been superb for Ajax since joining the club from Barcelona in 2015 and he played a key role in helping the Dutch giants secure a league and cup double last season as well as making it to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The 23-year-old was virtually ever-present throughout the campaign – keeping 26 clean sheets in 55 appearances – and it appears his impressive form has caught the eye of Manchester United.

No doubt United will do all they can to persuade De Gea to sign a new deal as he’s been their best player in recent years but if the Spaniard does leave then it looks like Solskjaer has identified Onana as the man he wants as a replacement.
