Manchester United are confident of agreeing a £25m deal with Newcastle United to sign Sean Longstaff as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer closes in on his second summer signing, according to the Mirror.
Solskjaer is going to be extremely busy over the coming weeks overhauling his squad after United endured a disappointing campaign that saw them miss out on Champions League football after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.
Man Utd have already snapped-up winger Daniel James from Swansea City and they are being linked with a number of defenders such as Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka but Solskjaer is also looking to strengthen his midfield options.
Longstaff emerged as a target earlier this month and although the 21-year-old appeared to pledge his future to his boyhood club recently, the Mirror claim Man Utd remain confident they can lure the midfielder to Old Trafford.
The newspaper says Longstaff fits the profile of player Solskjaer wants to sign as the Norwegian coach is looking for young British talent who can develop their skills further rather than expensive established names.
According to the Mirror, United chiefs are hoping to agree a deal worth £25m with Newcastle to make Longstaff their second major signing of the summer before turning their attention to strengthening their defence.
Longstaff came through the youth ranks at St James’ Park and made 11 successive starts under Rafa Benitez last season before picking up a serious knee injury in early March that ended his season.
The 21-year-old midfielder appears to have a huge future ahead of him and he could be viewed as a long-term replacement for Ander Herrera after the Spaniard left the club having run down his contract.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but it looks like Longstaff could be heading to Old Trafford and I think he’d be another exciting addition to Solskjaer’s new-look squad.
