Liverpool keen on £45m star as Klopp prepares to ‘splash the cash’ on 1st signing

Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign £45m-rated Real Betis full-back Junior Firpo as Jurgen Klopp prepares to ‘splash the cash’ in order to keep up with their rivals this summer, according to reports via the Mirror.

Klopp is only expected to make minor changes to his squad after winning the Champions League and narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City last season.

However, a new left-back is on the agenda as Alberto Moreno will leave Liverpool when his contract expires this month after falling out-of-favour so Klopp needs to bring in a replacement to offer support to Andy Robertson.

Obviously Robertson will remain first choice as the Scottish international has proven to be an outstanding signing for Liverpool since joining the club from Hull City and he’s now regarded as one of the best left-backs in Europe.

But Klopp needs quality back-up for Robertson to allow him to keep his squad fresh in order to compete on all fronts next season and it appears the Liverpool boss has now lined-up Firpo as a potential signing.

The Mirror are citing a report from Sport that claims Liverpool have identified Firpo as a replacement for Moreno and are now weighing-up a move for the talented Real Betis full-back.

However, a deal won’t come cheap as the Spanish publication says Firpo has a release clause worth £45m and the 22-year-old four years left on his contract so Betis are under no pressure to sell for anything less.

Firpo impressed in La Liga last season and is tipped to become a full Spanish international having already represented his country at U21 level so he’d be an exciting addition to Liverpool’s squad if they could get a deal agreed.

Klopp has confirmed that he’s ready to ‘splash the cash’ this summer in order to keep up with his big-spending rivals. The Reds boss is quoted by the Mirror as telling German TV outlet ZDF:

“Liverpool is an ambitious club and if we didn’t spend the same amount of money as others, we wouldn’t be able to compete,”

“Everybody’s splashing the cash, so we have to do the same.”

It looks like Klopp is ready to spend big money this summer to ensure his squad stays competitive against the likes of Man City but it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will be prepared to pay £45m for a second choice left-back.
