Man Utd’s proposed deal under threat after Tottenham table bid to sign £59m star
Manchester United’s proposed move to sign Bruno Fernandes is under threat as Tottenham have tabled an offer for the £59m Sporting Lisbon midfielder
We’re now at the business end of the summer transfer window and managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the world. Here, Tottenham join the hunt for Bruno Fernandes…
Manchester United’s proposed deal to sign Bruno Fernandes is under threat as Tottenham have tabled an offer for the £59m-rated Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder, according to reports via the Mirror.
Fernandes has been one of the hottest players of the summer transfer window after enjoying a sensational campaign with Sporting last season that saw him provide 32 goals and 18 assists in all competitions.
The 24-year-old is now considered to be one of the most dangerous attacking midfielders in European football and he’s been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United in recent months.
Marca reported last weekend that Fernandes was set to join United following a breakthrough in negotiations while the Mirror cite reports from Portugal as saying the player was due to seal his move to Old Trafford early next week after an agreement in principal was found between the two clubs.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperately trying to sign a creative midfielder all summer and it looked as though he had bagged Fernandes with the Portuguese international expected to secure a move to United following Sunday’s Super Cup clash with Benfica.
However, it appears that proposed deal is now in doubt as the Mirror are citing a report from O Jogo that claims Tottenham officials have flown to Portugal to hold formal talks with Sporting president Frederico Varandas.
The Portuguese publication says Spurs are continuing to negotiate a deal after seeing their opening £41m [€45m] bid rejected with Sporting Lisbon demanding £59m [€65m] to part with Fernandes this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino has been in the market for a creative midfielder as they look for potential replacements for Christian Eriksen after he went public with his desire to seek a new challenge away from north London.
It looks like Spurs have turned their attention to Fernandes after struggling to agree terms for Real Betis star Giovani Lo Celso and they may feel confident of beating United to his signature as they can offer Fernandes Champions League football.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming hours but it looks like their will now be a fierce battle for Fernandes during the closing days of the window and I think he’d be an excellent signing for Spurs or United.
