Report: £64m star wants to join Tottenham despite claims Man Utd move is a done deal
Bruno Fernandes has informed Sporting Lisbon he wants to join Tottenham but Nicolo Schira says his move to Manchester United is a ‘done deal’.
We’re now at the business end of the summer transfer window and managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the world. Here, the latest on the future of Bruno Fernandes…
There are contrasting reports surrounding Bruno Fernandes today as the Daily Mail claims the midfielder has informed Sporting Lisbon he wants to join Tottenham while Nicolo Schira says his move to Manchester United is a ‘done deal’.
Fernandes’s future has been one of the sagas of the summer transfer window as he’s been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League after enjoying a stunning campaign that saw him provide 32 goals and 18 assists in all competitions last season.
The 24-year-old has been touted as one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s prime targets and Marca reported recently that Fernandes was set for a move to Old Trafford following an apparent breakthrough in negotiations with Sporting.
Italian journalist Nicolo Schira – who works for Gazzetta dello Sport – claims Fernandes will join United on a €6m-per-year contract and will complete his move after Sunday’s Portuguese Super Cup clash against Benfica.
He tweeted:
#ManchesterUnited have a total agreement for #BrunoFernandes, but #Sporting have asked to Bruno stay with the for the Portugual Supercup against Benfica. After this match he will leave for Manchester. #transfers #MUFC #mutd
All confirmed! After Portugal Super Cup #BrunoFernandes will leave from #Sporting to #ManchesterUnited. For him is ready a contract by €6M plus bonuses a year. #transfers #MUFF #mutd
Solskjaer has been in the market for a creative midfielder throughout the summer and it appeared the United boss was set to wrap-up a deal for Fernandes shortly after agreeing an £80m deal for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.
However, Tottenham have also been linked with the Portuguese international in recent days with O Jogo reporting late last week that Spurs had sent officials to Lisbon to hold face-to-face talks with Sporting president Frederico Varandas.
It looks like this late intervention may have scuppered United’s proposed deal as the Daily Mail claims today that Fernandes informed Varandas during talks on Friday that he wants to join Tottenham this summer.
The newspaper says the midfielder has pleaded with Sporting not to stand in his way and help facilitate a move to Spurs but the north Londoners are still some way short of meeting their £64m asking price.
The Daily Mail says this valuation has put-off Man Utd – contrary to the previous reports – but Fernandes is hoping a compromise can be found with Tottenham so he can seal a move to White Hart Lane.
Mauricio Pochettino is in the market for an attacking midfielder as Christian Eriksen is being tipped to leave after going public with his desire to seek a new challenge this summer and it appears Fernandes is on the Argentinean coaches radar.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but I think Fernandes would be an excellent signing for Tottenham, or indeed Man Utd, if either club could get a deal agreed for his signature.
