Liverpool get the new Premier League season underway when they welcome newly-promoted Norwich City at Anfield this evening.
The Merseysiders missed out on the title last season by the narrowest of margins after finishing just one point behind eventual champions Manchester City – who secured back-to-back titles under Pep Guardiola.
The Reds finished with a staggering 97 points and a repeat this season would surely see them crown champions and end their long wait for the Premier League trophy. A quick look at the bookmaker football betting odds shows us that City are 1/2 favourites to retain their title with Liverpool at 5/2 but it’s sure to a close race once again.
It was still a memorable campaign for Liverpool last season as they won the European Cup for the sixth time in their history after beating Tottenham 2-0 in the final in Madrid but the odds are against them repeating that feat this campaign so they’ll focus their attention on winning the league.
Norwich head to Anfield looking to get their campaign off to a positive start after securing promotion back to the top flight by winning the Championship last season but this will be an extremely tough opening game for the Canaries.
Team News
Liverpool attacker Sadio Mane is available despite not playing any part in pre-season following his late arrival from the African Cup of Nations but he’s expected to be on the bench.
James Milner is available after recovering from injury and Naby Keita is pushing for a recall but Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum are expected to start alongside Fabinho in midfield.
Norwich will be without the injured trio of Christoph Zimmermann, Alex Tettey and Louis Thompson while Timm Klose is also doubtfulwith a hip problem.
Predicted score
Liverpool 3-0 Norwich: The Reds endured a tough pre-season as not many of those who bet on football would have backed them not to win any of their pre-season games but the results weren’t important as it’s all about building fitness. Liverpool have a formidable home record having not lost any of their last 40 league games at Anfield and I can’t see that ending tonight. Norwich were excellent in the Championship but this is a totally different level of football so I’m expecting a routine home win.
Betting odds
Liverpool are obviously the heavy favourites with the bookies as they are 1/8 to collect all three points at home tonight. Norwich can be backed at a huge 20/1 while the draw is available at 9/1.
It’s not often I say this as football betting can be extremely difficult to predict at times but this really is a ‘home banker’ if ever I saw one. Liverpool will be desperate to get off to a strong start and their record at Anfield will continue with an easy win. Sports betting can sometimes present us with a chance to make some easy money and this game is one such opportunity.
Our prediction of Liverpool 3-0 Norwich is available at odds of 13/2 and those among the football betting community who want more tempting odds could consider backing Mohamed Salah to have 3+ shots at 5/4.
