The Blues started well and went close to opening the scoring in the 36th minute when Ross Barkley saw his volley at the far post well saved by Brighton goalkeeper Mathew Ryan but it was all square at half-time.
However, Chelsea were given the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock shortly after the break when Mason Mount was upended in the box by Adam Webster. Jorginho made no mistake from the spot as he made it 1-0 in the 50th minute.
The Seagulls pushed to find a way back into the game but it Chelsea who got the all-important second goal as Willian fired past Ryan at his near post in the 75th minute to make it 2-0.
Chelsea held on to secure a vital win and give Lampard his first home Premier League victory as manager at Stamford Bridge to move the Blues up to sixth in the table.
