Chelsea closed in on the top four of the Premier League table with an impressive 4-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s this afternoon.
Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Callum Hudson-Odoi lofted the ball through to Tammy Abraham who got there just ahead of Angus Gunn. The Blues striker sent the ball high towards goal and while Maya Yoshida managed to clear it before it hit the net, goal line technology confirmed the ball had crossed the line. 1-0 to Chelsea.
It wasn’t long before the visitors doubled their advantage as Mason Mount fired past Gunn in the 24th minute after being put through by Willian following some good interplay between Abraham and Jorginho.
Southampton halved the deficit six minutes later when Danny Ings poked home from close range following a brilliant run from Jan Valery so it was 2-1 to Chelsea in the 30th minute.
However, Chelsea restored their two-goal cushion before half-time when Marcos Alonso found N’Golo Kante and the midfielders shot from a central position found the corner via a big deflection off Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
The second half was largely uneventful but Chelsea managed to add a late fourth as substitutes Michy Batshuayi and Christian Pulisic combined well before the Belgian hitman fired home for 4-1 in the 89th minute.
The victory sees Chelsea climb up to fifth place in the Premier League table – level on points with Leicester City and just two behind second placed Manchester City.
