LIVERPOOL INJURY UPDATE – SKRTEL OUT FOR WEEKS WHILE JOHNSON CLOSE TO COMEBACK
By Football Talk.
Mixed injury news today for Liverpool fans. Manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed defender Martin Skrtel has broken a metatarsal in his foot and will be sidelined for several weeks. However Glen Johnson is close to making a comeback.
Skrtel picked up the injury during Thursday’s Europa League victory over Urinea Urziceni and scans today confirmed the break. Not good news for Liverpool as the centre back has been playing well and recently and forming a good partnership with Agger while Carragher has been covering at right-back.
Rafa Benitez feels this is a big blow to Liverpool as they try and claim fourth place in the Premier League.
We were really disappointed after the game because it was a good result but then we had the bad news about Martin,” Benitez told the club’s official website. “He’s had X-rays today and they confirmed he has a broken metatarsal.
“We have to check over the next couple of days how long it will take to recover.”
The good news for Liverpool is that Glen Johnson is back in light training so with him close to a comeback, Carragher can now move back into the centre to replace Skrtel while he is out. Although Benitez confirmed Johnson wont be available this weekend, he may be back the following week.
He’s doing well. He was training today with the team – a light training session,” added Benitez.
“I was watching him and he was quite sharp. But Sunday will be too soon.”
