Man United to Sign Manuel Neuer?
The need for a replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar has been well documented, since the the big Dutchman revealed his plans to retire at the end of the season. We struggled for years to replace Peter Schmeichel, with many coming and going, but none really cutting the mustard.
Although we signed Anders Lindegaard, who is certainly a prospect, Fergie has obviously identified the need for a proven keeper to replace Van Der Sar initially.
Manuel Neuer has been rumoured to be a target since his impressive performances in the world cup for Ze Germans and the 24 year old is without question a top keeper. We have had a look at him in the blog before, with the keeper clearly catching the eye of Fergie.
It has been widely reported that Fergie has stepped up his pursuit of the young keeper. Apparently, the United goalkeeping coach, Eric Steele, went on a scouting mission to watch Neuer in action for Schalke against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
Of course, it is a possibility also that Steele was there to run the rule over the Leverkusen no.1 Rene Adler, whom United have also been linked with in the past. These scouting missions happen all the time so there is no sense in getting Neuer on the back of the jersey just yet, but it is interesting nonetheless. Would you like to see the German at the club?
