Will Conte and Tuchel Red Cards Affect Their Teams Odds in Their Next Matches?
What will the reds cards to Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel mean for the two teams and their odds of winning coming matches?
Anyone watching the Premier League games on 14 August will have seen the flare-ups between Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte that resulted in both men receiving red cards at the end of the 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.
Following the game, the FA confirmed that both coaches have been charged for “improper behaviour.” So, what will the reds cards, one game touchline ban, and potential further action mean for the two teams and their odds of winning coming matches?
Tuchel and Conte will both miss at least one match
Let’s start by recognising the fact that both Tuchel and Conte are now banned from the touchline for at least one match. This is likely to impact Chelsea’s game against Leeds and Tottenham’s meeting with Wolves.
There is also the chance that both men could face further action following the charge of “improper behaviour,” Conte’s comments on social media, and Tuchel’s remarks about the referee.
In particular, Tuchel could face the wrath of the FA after being vociferous in his criticism of match official Anthony Taylor. He has suggested that Taylor acted against Chelsea with the decisions he made during the game. Referring to an online petition by fans that alleges this Taylor bias, he said that it’s not only the fans who feel this way but the players, and the whole dressing room, too.
It remains to be seen what the FA thinks of these comments. They will also have to consider the responses from Conte and Tuchel to the charge of “improper behaviour.” The two coaches have to provide these responses by 18 August.
After this date it will become clear whether the clubs face having their coaches sanctioned further. In the meantime, it’s interesting to consider what effect the one match touchline ban has had on both teams’ odds of winning their next matches.
How will Tuchel and Conte’s absence affect the odds on their teams winning?
To consider the effect on odds that Tuchel and Conte’s bans may have, we spoke to a journalist from justgamblers.com. He said,
“Right now, if you look at the odds for Tottenham’s next game at home against Wolves, they do not appear to have been adversely affected by Conte’s ban. Every sportsbook has Tottenham odds on to win. Given that Wolves have had one defeat and one draw so far this season, it’s easy to see why Tottenham are such hot favourites.”
He went on to state,
“The situation is similar with Chelsea. They are odds on with sportsbooks to win away at Leeds. However, Leeds have had a decent start to the season with a win and a draw, so this may not be a nailed-on win for Chelsea and the loss of Tuchel from the touchline could be felt. That being said, you still have to fancy Chelsea for the win.”
So, it does not seem as though the initial impact of the red cards for Tuchel and Conte will be too harsh for Chelsea and Tottenham. If the FA takes further action, the impact may be reflected in the odds for future games, only time will tell.
