With the Premier League now paused for a six-week break while the FIFA World Cup 2022 takes place, there is speculation about how sides will act in the upcoming January 2023 transfer window. One of these sides is Liverpool, who have had a rocky start to the season. The team’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, has recently spoken to the media and shared his thoughts on the upcoming transfer window.
Liverpool’s Woes So Far This Season
Heading into the FIFA World Cup 2022 break, Liverpool are sitting sixth in the Premier League table.
Many would say they are lucky to be there, the way their season started. Across the first eight games of the Premier League season, Liverpool could only record two wins against Newcastle and Bournemouth. Outside of this, they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United and 3-2 by Arsenal and held to draws by Fulham, Crystal Palace, Everton and Brighton.
While the side has recorded four wins since then to lift themselves to sixth, overall they have appeared lacklustre compared to previous seasons. Add to this the fact that multiple players have been injured, with Ibrahima Konate, Arthur Melo, Joel Matip and Diogo Jota all spending time on the sideline, and it’s been a rough start to the season for Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp Opens Up About January Transfer Window
While many of us are busy preparing our VPNs for streaming football so that we can watch the FIFA World Cup 2022 from wherever we are in the world, Jurgen Klopp has spoken out to the media about the upcoming transfer window.
The team manager has responded to questions about how Liverpool will act in the upcoming transfer window, by saying, “We are always open to these kinds of things, but we don’t have to open that discussion.”
Klopp then expanded, stating, “It doesn’t help now because it is always the same, we always talk about the same, it’s always the same – if there’s something possible for us, we will do it. Of course, we want to improve the team all the time, we just believe in the training ground as well, that we can do it there, so we will see what happens.”
While the manager has avoided intentionally inflaming media rumours by taking a balanced angle towards answering the question, his intent is clear. Klopp is willing to capitalise on the upcoming transfer window to turn this ship around.
Jude Bellingham the Man in Klopp’s Focus
Recently it has come out that Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool management team are focusing on English international Jude Bellingham in the January transfer window.
The team had allegedly put aside £86 million to sign the 19-year-old, but it seems that that figure will fall short of Bellingham’s current team’s price tag. Borussia Dortmund have put a whopping £128.9 million price tag on the midfielder, which will be a stretch for Liverpool to reach, with Manchester United rumoured to be interested.
Klopp has previously stated that Jude Bellingham is the man he wants to revitalise the Liverpool midfield with, as ageing players such as Fabinho are beginning to look past their expiry date.
