Arsenal: Vermaelen Suspension Update

By on March 21, 2010

Arsenal's Vermaelen

By Fab4.

Yesterday Arsenal beat West ham 2-0 at the Emirates to go top of the  premier league but this usually joyous occasion was dampened by the sending off of Thomas Vermaelen for an innocuous challenge on Franco, with the West Ham striker falling theatrically to the deck under the slightest of contact for the Arsenal defender.

Just to clarify how many games Vermaelen will be suspended for: 1 game. The FA Rulebook states the following:

Player Sent Off Under Law 12 (4) and (5) – Denying a goal or obvious goal scoring opportunity
will be suspended for 1 match, fined £20 and be subject to 2 penalty points

This news will come as a huge relief to many Gooner’s who were shuddering at the thought of Campbell and Silvestre being left with the responsibility of marshaling our backline against Birmingham, Wolves and more importantly the Spuds.

Arsene Wenger has also suggested he may play Song at the back after his superb performance there during the second half against the Hammers. I would prefer that option to be honest, but at least it’s only one game we have to worry about.

Thank god it is only one game. But I think it will be Song and Silvestre at CB next week against Birmingham, cos Sol takes a full week to recover and Wenger will want him to play against Barca.

At ESPN they kept saying it was a 3-match ban. Their pundits know even less about football then Sky’s do!

I can live with this refereeing interpretationif there is consistency and fairness in the EPL.
But in England referees are hideously biased towards Manchester United.
Just compare the refereeing in this game with the refereeing of the Manchester United Liverpool game. Yet another gifted penalty from an incident which started outside of the area, a whole barrage of biased interpretations and decisons in Uniteds favour.
Is it any wonder that they are top of the league every year.

The reason manusa have won so much silverware is the constant “assistance” they get from referees, not only in their own games, but also in games involving their rivals (like refs trying to get Arsenal to drop points).

The reason the “authorities” don’t want video or technical assistance brought into the game is that it will limit their ability to control the outcome of games, otherwise known as cheating.

True, that some of us needed this clarification, I also thought it was going to be a three match ban. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for explanation on TV red card. There should be kind of purnishnent to these match officials. I pray that FIFA will avoid EPL referees at this coming world cup.

I agree with mike, manu is always winning not deservedly but, with the aid of poor refreing in england, if not poor perhaps intentionally. i wd not be surprised if the aid still hands them the trophy this season.
The FA shd get refrees fron else where in europe for top clash matches.
